This wonderful journey through captivating Costa Rica, offers the traveller the chance to experience beautiful national parks, golden beaches and the active Poás and Arenal Volcanoes. As well you will experience San José, Costa Rica’s cultural capital with its many museums.
Costa Rica’s capital San José, or as the locals call it “Chepe” is at the heart of Costa Rica in location as well as culture. This cosmopolitan city with it’s chic cafes, art galleries, museums and boutique hotels feels like a good blend of North American and Latin American styles. At an altitude of 1,170 metres the weather is always pleasant and it serves as a good base to visit the nearby Poás Volcano.
Day 1 – San José
Upon arrival at San Jose International Airport you will be warmly welcomed and accompanied to your hotel for check in. The rest of the day is free to relax after a long flight and we can help advise of places of interest near to the hotel if you would like to explore the local area.
Day 2 – San José – Poás Volcano
After breakfast your guide will escort you to the Poás volcano. Although active the volcano hasn’t erupted since 1910 but there is plenty of activity around one of the world’s largest craters. Water from from the rain filled crater seeps through cracks in the hot rocks creating steam clouds and geysers. A pleasant 20 min stroll leads from the ranger station to the lookout point, then there is an optional 2km hike on a trail to the Botos Lagoon which leads through a beautiful dwarf forest.
After exploring the volcano you drive back to the Central Valley and San José for an afternoon walking tour of the capital. Your guide will explain hidden secrets of this fascinating city during a city walk through the most important monuments and buildings. You will also visit the famous Gold Museum which hosts a fantastic collection of pre-Columbinan golden artefacts.
Located on the Caribbean Coast and only accessible by air and water the Tortuguero National Park is home to a remarkable and diverse amount of fauna and flora. One the the highlights of a visit here is to encounter endangered Green Turtles that return to Tortuguero (which means turtle catcher) to lay their eggs every year between July and October. If you are planning a trip outside of those months you will be rewarded with a rich collection of other wildlife including iguanas, sloths, primates, tree frogs and if you are very lucky – jaguar!
Day 3 – San José > Tortuguero
An early start this morning, helped by a cup of good Costa Rican coffee, before your approximately 3 hour transfer to Tortuguero. The first two hours is by road broken by a stop for breakfast then you will board a boat for the final leg into Tortuguero and check in to your lodge.
The boat trip to the lodge is a good way to start your Tortuguero experience and during your time to Tortuguero you will form part of a small international group led by a certified nature guide.
After lunch at the lodge you will visit the charming Caribbean village of Tortuguero for a guided tour before returning back to the lodge for dinner.
Day 4 – Tortuguero
After breakfast a you board a small boat for an approximately 2 hour trip through the canals of Tortuguero National Park, guided by an expert naturalist you are ensured to get close to the diverse wildlife here.
After lunch at the hotel you will return to the water to explore more canals and wildlife encounters.
Dinner is back at the Lodge.
Puerto Viejo de Limón or simply Puerto Viejo to the locals is a laid back town on the South Caribbean coast. Famous for it’s surf, stunning beaches and mix of cultures that include Afro Caribbean, Bribri Indians and Ticos (Cost Ricans). There is an easy going charm to the friendly town, the kind of place travellers visit for a few days and stay for years.
Day 5 – Tortuguero > Puerto Viejo de Limón
Breakfast at the lodge and time to relax before transferring by water and road to Puerto Viejo de Limón with a lunch stop along the way.
Day 6 – Puerto Viejo de Limón
Today there is time to explore the beautiful beaches of the South Caribbean and immerse yourself in the laid back atmosphere of Puerto Viejo de Limón.
At a time suitable for you you will meet Doña Beatriz who is an expert in Caribbean cuisine for a cooking class. You will collect the ingredients with your teacher and help her to prepare some of the delicious Caribbean dishes famous in the region, learning to cook in the traditional Costa Rican way.
The quaint town of La Fortuna is only 4 miles from the famous Arenal Volcano, that until 2012 erupted daily. The volcano has a perfect conic form and it’s 1600 meter height means it dominates the landscape.
Day 7 – Puerto Viejo de Limón > La Fortuna
After breakfast your guide will drive the approximately 4.5 hours to La Fortuna.
You will check into your hotel which has fabulous views of the volcano and lush forest surroundings home to many different variety of bird.
Day 8 – La Fortuna
After breakfast you will join a small group for a hike led by a naturist along a trail that has hanging bridges through the canopy of the rainforest getting you up close to the fauna and flora. After the hike board a sky tram to a platform with an incredible views of the rainforest, Lake Arenal and the volcano.
Then it’s onto the nearby Arenal National Park for a guided walk across some old lava flows before finishing the day relaxing in warm volcanic heated water of the Tabacón hotspings where dinner is included.
Monteverde, or green mountains, is situated at an altitude of around 1400 meters placing the verdant rainforest into the clouds. The lush mountain tops are a wildlife paradise containing a remarkable amount of biodiversity and is home to many species of bird including the beautifully resplendent Quetzal. The main village Santa Elena was founded by American Quakers searching for a peaceful place to practice their religion and work and now welcomes travellers from all over the world drawn to its natural beauty.
Day 9 – La Fortuna > Monteverde
After breakfast you will be driven to Monteverde. During the approximately 3.5 hour very scenic drive you will notice there is a big change in the natural environment as you head into the mountains.
Day 10 – Monteverde
After breakfast you will head into the Montverde Private Reserve with a naturalist guide. With it’s abundant plant growth and misty weather the cloud forest evokes an almost magical atmosphere. With some luck you may be able to spot the famous Quetzal bird.
In the afternoon you visit a coffee finca (farm) for a fascinating insight into the importance of the bean to Costa Rica and of course taste a good cup at the end of the tour.
One of the most picturesque sections of Costa Rica’s coast line is here at Manuel Antonio National Park. Sugar white sand beaches are gently lapped one side by the lazy waves of the Pacific Ocean while the tropical rain forest full of nature fringe the other.
Day 11 – Monteverde > Manuel Antonio
After breakfast you will embark on another beautifully scenic drive to the Pacific coast and Manuel Antonio National Park. Once checked into your hotel the rest of the day is free.
Day 12 – Manuel Antonio
A full day to relax and unwind to enjoy one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful national parks.
Day 13 – Manuel Antonio > San José
After a leisurely start to the day you will be transferred by provate vehicle San José for your final night in Costa Rica.
Day 14 San José
Your tour ends after breakfast and you will be transferred to San Jose international airport in time to catch your onward flight.
